Online MBAs in the UK for working professionals

Professionals collaborating during an online MBA

An online MBA lets an experienced professional study general management without leaving employment, but the routes differ materially on academic entry, professional experience, live participation, campus attendance, duration and total cost.

“Online” does not always mean entirely remote or self-paced.

This comparison uses facts published by the awarding universities and checked on 29 August 2026. It is a curated information set, not a ranking or a list of programmes confirmed as available through CareerSkale. CareerSkale has not yet confirmed that it supports applications to any of these four routes. The named university decides admission, delivery, assessment and the award.

How these online MBAs were selected

The table includes four established UK degree-awarding universities with a current online or principally online MBA page, enough public information to compare key decision factors, and a route designed for working professionals. Selection is illustrative rather than exhaustive, and table order is not a quality score.

Applicants should confirm every fact on the university's current course page and offer letter. Fees and dates change, and tax can depend on where the student studies.

Awarding-status line: each qualification in this table is awarded by the named UK university. That is different from a private training provider issuing its own certificate or delivering a programme on behalf of an unnamed “partner university”. Verify the exact awarding name in the offer and on the final award.

Do not compare tuition alone

The published totals span a wide range, but they do not contain identical items. Compare:

  • application and confirmation deposits;
  • residential, travel, accommodation and meal costs;
  • study materials and optional modules;
  • resit, repeat-module and extension charges;
  • local tax, currency conversion and banking costs;
  • graduation and document charges; and
  • whether annual module prices can rise during the programme.

Ask the university for a dated schedule covering the full planned duration. A lower headline total may change if a student takes longer, repeats work or studies from a jurisdiction where tax applies.

What this comparison cannot decide

The table cannot decide teaching quality, personal return or cultural fit from public facts alone. Ask to sample the learning environment, speak with current students through a channel controlled by the university, and inspect how often faculty give live feedback. Compare the proportion of individual and group assessment, the availability of optional modules, alumni access after graduation and support across your time zone.

Career statistics also need definitions. Record the graduating class, number surveyed, response rate, employment status before study, outcome date and whether salary figures are mean or median. A school-wide ranking or testimonial should not be converted into a promise for an online cohort or individual applicant.

Which entry route fits your profile?

Check classification or GPA, professional-experience length, English evidence and whether the school expects management responsibility rather than general employment. A minimum threshold does not predict admission; selective schools also assess progression, leadership, motivation and cohort contribution.

Do not rely on “experience accepted” unless the university publishes a defined alternative. The Open University lists particular study pathways for applicants without a bachelor's degree. Imperial refers to an approved professional qualification alongside its work-experience minimum. Those are institution-specific routes, not a general right to MBA admission.

Read MBA entry without a bachelor's degree and obtain a written eligibility decision before paying a deposit.

The university decides equivalence. Provide the original award, transcript and certified translation where required. English-language evidence may still be required even if prior study used English.

Workload and attendance

An online MBA still includes fixed assessment dates and may include scheduled live classes, group projects and intensive periods.

Before choosing, map required live sessions against time zone, work travel and caring duties. Ask whether sessions are recorded, group work can be scheduled across regions, and missing an intensive block affects progression.

MBA or Executive MBA?

Both awards normally cover broad management disciplines. An Executive MBA is commonly designed around a more senior, experienced cohort and may use intensive live or residential blocks. The title alone does not prove higher academic level, stronger recognition or better career value.

Use Executive MBA compared with an MBA to test eligibility and cohort fit. If the school calls a programme “executive”, inspect the actual experience threshold, cohort profile, timetable and award title.

A defensible shortlist method

  1. Confirm the legal awarding university and its recognised status.
  2. Record exact entry requirements and obtain an eligibility response.
  3. Compare total cost under the same assumptions.
  4. Map live, residential and group-work commitments.
  5. Review curriculum, assessment and elective depth.
  6. Ask for current completion, withdrawal and career evidence with definitions.
  7. Read deposit, cancellation and refund terms before paying.

Avoid choosing from rankings alone. A ranking may describe research, reputation or a surveyed cohort, while your decision depends on delivery, workload, price, entry and intended career use.

CareerSkale availability and support

No route in this comparison is described as a CareerSkale offering. If CareerSkale cannot confirm a current application pathway, intake and programme-level relationship, use this as editorial guidance and apply to the university directly.

For a confirmed route, CareerSkale can explain its admissions-support steps but cannot decide admission or alter university requirements. See admissions support in the UK for that boundary.

Frequently asked questions

Where the same recognised university awards an MBA, online delivery does not by itself change the award level. The programme design and experience can still differ.

The Open University has the lowest published estimate in this four-route comparison, but the comparison date, inclusions, annual module pricing and personal circumstances matter.

These routes are designed for working professionals, but required weekly study, live sessions, travel and peak assessment periods still need employer and household planning.

No. The university makes the admission decision.
