Prior qualifications
Many UK research programmes expect at least a strong bachelor's degree; some require or strongly prefer a relevant master's. Requirements vary by subject and research intensity. A course may accept international equivalents, but the institution determines equivalence.
A master's can provide research-methods training, a dissertation and recent academic references. An applicant without one may need stronger evidence from an undergraduate dissertation, research employment, publications, professional research or an integrated route.
The University of Brighton's current doctoral guidance, for example, says applicants without a master's may be considered but normally need a high-performing undergraduate record. That is one university's policy, not a sector-wide entitlement.
Read entering a PhD without a master's degree for the explicit exception routes.
International qualifications and equivalence
An overseas degree should be assessed under the target institution's country guidance or admissions process. Similar titles do not guarantee the same level, and a framework comparison does not decide subject preparation or research readiness.
Provide the original certificate and full transcript, grading scale, official translation where required, award date and legal awarding institution. If the teaching college differs from the awarder, state both. Do not describe a private credential evaluation as the institution's admission decision.
Ask whether the institution needs a formal comparability service, accepts its own assessment or requires additional evidence. Record any confirmed equivalence in writing because another university may reach a different decision.
