Editorial and accuracy policy

An editor examining evidence carefully

CareerSkale publishes guidance to help applicants understand programmes, institutions, entry requirements, costs and recognition questions.

This policy explains how that information should be prepared and what we do when a source is incomplete, contradictory or changes.

The sources we use

We prefer the source closest to the fact being described. For programme structure, entry requirements, fees and delivery, that is normally the institution or provider responsible for the programme. For legal status, recognised degree-awarding powers or accreditation, we look for the relevant government, regulator or recognised-register source.

Which source applies depends on the country, and in the United Kingdom it also depends on the nation. Degree-awarding powers are devolved, so there is no single UK register:

Criterion 01 of 05

England

the Office for Students Register

the Office for Students Register

the Scottish Government's list of recognised bodies

the list of recognised bodies in Wales, alongside Medr's Register of Higher Education Providers

the Department for the Economy's recognised and listed bodies

the UK-wide list of recognised awards, reached through the government's degree-recognition checker

Ofqual regulates qualifications and awarding organisations in England. It does not confer degree-awarding powers, and we do not treat an Ofqual listing as evidence of them.

Outside the UK we use CHEA and the US Department of Education for the United States, EQAR for European quality-assurance agencies, and the applicable Swiss higher-education sources. Our guide to checking accreditation sets out the same routes for readers.

Commercial relationship information is treated separately. A statement from CareerSkale about working with an institution does not prove accreditation, degree-awarding authority or acceptance of a qualification.

Focus 01

How we present uncertain or conflicting information

We do not choose the most favourable version when two public sources disagree. The page should identify the difference, link to the relevant sources and explain what the applicant should confirm before relying on either version.

If an institution does not publish a fee, intake, entry requirement or relationship listing, we do not substitute a generic figure or imply that the information is confirmed. If the missing fact determines whether an offering can be described accurately, that offering remains outside the public search experience until the fact is resolved.

Corrections

If you identify a factual error, use the CareerSkale contact page and include:

  • the URL of the page;
  • the statement you believe is wrong;
  • the source that supports the correction; and
  • the date you accessed that source.

A correction should be checked against the best available source, applied to every affected page and recorded with an updated review date where appropriate.

Commercial and editorial separation

CareerSkale's commercial relationship with an institution must not change how the institution's awarder, fees, requirements or recognition position are described.

For the current institution evidence and the practical steps a reader can take, see how CareerSkale works with institutions and how to check recognition and accreditation.
