What an online doctorate really costs

A visual arrangement of doctoral study costs

The true cost of an online doctorate is annual tuition multiplied by the realistic registration period, plus charges for admission, supervision, progression, extension, submission, examination, graduation and any travel.

A headline fee without duration and exclusions is not a total.

The named institution awards the doctorate, sets its fees and controls refunds.

CareerSkale can compare published information but does not set academic charges or guarantee that a figure remains current.

A total-cost model

Use this calculation before comparing institutions:

Total study cost = tuition across all charged years + compulsory institutional charges + research and attendance costs + payment costs + overrun allowance − confirmed funding

Build three scenarios:

  • minimum: completion in the stated normal period with no reassessment;
  • realistic: annual fee increases, ordinary research costs and a reasonable completion margin; and
  • stress: extension, resubmission, extra travel or a delayed project.

Do not subtract a scholarship, employer payment or loan until eligibility and amount are confirmed in writing.

Worked planning example

Suppose annual tuition is £5,238 for three planned years. The base is £15,714 before annual increases. Add a completion fee, software, data collection and one campus visit, then calculate a fourth-year or writing-up scenario. If tuition rises annually, do not multiply the first-year price by every year.

For an overseas programme-total quote, divide payments by date and currency rather than by academic year. Add membership and registration at the start, research and banking costs during study, and extension or examination at the end. The two routes can then be compared on a common sterling scenario without pretending the exchange rate is fixed.

Keep the assumptions beside the total. A precise-looking figure built from unknown charges is less useful than an honest range with every unknown named.

How route changes cost

UK university PhD tuition is usually charged annually. For 2026/27, several recognised universities, including Queen Mary University of London, publish a Home full-time benchmark of £5,238 and part-time £2,619, while international and specialist bands are higher. Total cost depends on whether three, four or more annual charges apply and what writing-up fee follows.

DBAs may use annual fees or a programme total. Taught modules, cohort delivery, professional facilities and dissertation supervision can change the structure. The reviewed CareerSkale-partner totals range from $5,550 for one US Executive DBA to $24,150 for Birchwood, with different awarders and recognition positions. The currencies and programmes are not like-for-like.

A shorter registration period may reduce institutional fees, but the existing research and publications took time and money to produce. Eligibility is often restricted, and legitimate routes can still require a critical commentary, supervision and viva. Do not treat experience alone as a paid shortcut.

Compare online doctorate routes before comparing prices.

Duration is part of price

A fee described “per year” needs a normal and maximum period. Part-time annual tuition may be roughly lower but charged over more years, so the total is not automatically half. Annual inflation can make later years more expensive.

Ask what triggers writing-up, continuation or extension status, when full tuition stops, and whether fees continue through examination and corrections. Read how long a PhD takes.

Funding available to part-time students

Some UKRI studentships permit part-time study at 50% full-time equivalent or above under current training-grant conditions, but the particular project and research organisation control recruitment. UKRI-funded students normally must reside in the UK for most study and live within reasonable travel time of the organisation, so a fully overseas remote pattern is not the same as part-time eligibility.

England's Postgraduate Doctoral Loan can cover eligible full-time, part-time and distance courses, subject to residence, course and prior-funding rules. It contributes to fees and living costs; it is not a fee waiver or proof that the course is recognised for every purpose.

Employer sponsorship, university awards and charitable grants can also support part-time candidates, but each has its own scope. See PhD funding in the UK for the eligibility filters.

Payment and refund questions

Obtain one document naming:

  1. the legal payee;
  2. the awarding institution;
  3. each amount, currency and due date;
  4. the purpose and refund status of any seat-booking charge;
  5. when CareerSkale remits collected tuition;
  6. who holds money before enrolment;
  7. what happens after withdrawal, refusal or delayed intake;
  8. who refunds if the partner fails to deliver; and
  9. the complaint and escalation route.

CareerSkale may receive payment from a partner institution when a student enrols. Its legal pages and student documents must separately explain any money it collects from the applicant.

Compare value, not only price

A cheaper route may carry a different awarding status, research standard, support model or third-party acceptance. A higher fee does not itself prove recognition or quality. Check the legal awarder, official status, supervisor capacity, assessment and intended use alongside cost.
