UK admissions support for working professionals
We can help you organise your eligibility evidence, compare what programmes actually require and prepare an application for a UK-connected online or distance doctorate.
Before any of that, there is one check worth doing yourself, because it determines whether the rest matters: find out which institution will award the degree, and whether it is legally allowed to.
A provider can teach, recruit for or support a course without being the body whose name goes on the final award.
We cannot make an admission decision, grant a UK award, or turn a privately issued qualification into a UK-recognised degree.
The UK does not have one higher-education register
This trips up almost everyone, including people who have studied in the UK before. Degree-awarding powers are devolved. Which register you check depends on where the awarding institution is based.
Search the Office for Students Register, which shows registered providers and their regulatory status. Do not stop at a similar-looking name — verify the legal provider, then confirm which body awards the degree.
The Scottish Government's universities page identifies recognised bodies with degree-awarding powers, and distinguishes them from institutions teaching courses under validation arrangements. The teaching institution and the awarding institution are often different organisations.
Use the list of recognised bodies in Wales, linked from the UK degree-recognition checker. Medr — the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research — brought Wales's first Register of Higher Education Providers into force on 1 August 2026. Registration, funding oversight and degree-awarding powers are related but not interchangeable; confirm the named award through the recognised-bodies or recognised-awards route.
The Department for the Economy publishes the Northern Ireland recognised and listed bodies on its higher-education policy page. It sets out that a provider needs degree-awarding powers to award a UK-recognised degree, and separates recognised awarding bodies from listed teaching providers.
The UK government's degree-recognition checker routes you to the right national source and to the UK-wide list of recognised awards. That list matters when an award is recognised through a specific statutory route that a provider's marketing page would not make obvious.
Ofqual is not the register you want
Ofqual regulates qualifications and awarding organisations in England. That matters for regulated qualifications — but an Ofqual listing does not establish that an organisation holds university degree-awarding powers.
An Ofqual logo, a regulated qualification or a "Level 7" or "Level 8" description is not a substitute for checking who can legally award the degree. Neither is private accreditation, membership, candidacy, a quality certificate or a commercial rating. Our guide to checking accreditation explains where each of these sits.
Six questions to settle in writing before you pay
Ask the provider to answer all of these in one document:
- Who is the legal awarding body, and where can its authority be checked?
- Is the programme offered by that body directly, or delivered under validation, franchise or another arrangement?
- Will the award be a UK-recognised degree, a private institutional award, or something else?
- Is any campus attendance, residency, viva or live session compulsory?
- What is the total cost, including registration, assessment, extension, resubmission and graduation charges?
- Which cancellation and refund terms apply, and which entity is responsible for repaying you?
An answer about "Level 8", "international recognition" or "accreditation" is incomplete unless it names the framework, the body, the exact institutional status and what that means in practice.
What we look at before a UK doctoral application
For a typical doctoral enquiry we would review your bachelor's and master's qualifications, subject relevance and results, research or professional experience, proposed research area, evidence of English language ability where required, whether the programme expects you to have a supervisor before applying, your intended study mode and weekly availability, and any institution-specific prerequisites.
Requirements are not universal. Some programmes require a master's; others may consider a bachelor's plus substantial experience. Some professional doctorates weight senior practice heavily. Only the institution can decide whether an exception applies to you. UK PhD entry requirements sets out which requirements tend to be fixed and which are genuinely flexible.
Studying for a doctorate while working full time
Online delivery does not make a doctorate casual. Before you apply, check:
- whether registration is full-time or part-time;
- how often supervision happens, and the expected working hours;
- any mandatory live sessions, campus visits or residencies;
- research milestones and annual progression reviews;
- the minimum and maximum registration periods; and
- whether your employer can support the time, the data access or the research permissions you will need.
A route can be academically open to you and still be impractical for your working pattern. Compare the delivery obligations, not the headline duration.
What we can do here
We can help you interpret published requirements, build a shortlist, identify missing documents, check the application is complete and coordinate submission. We can also ask an institution to clarify information it has published inconsistently, which happens more often than you would expect.
You remain responsible for the accuracy and authorship of your application. The institution decides admission and is responsible for teaching, supervision, assessment and the award.
Any fee you would pay us, or any money we would handle on your behalf, is disclosed before you commit. How CareerSkale works and is paid explains our commercial arrangements with institutions.
Compare the actual options
Our directory of online PhD programmes in the UK lists routes with their institution, delivery, entry requirements and awarding status stated. Check the official register yourself before relying on any listing, including ours. If you want help organising the evidence in your profile, send it over. An initial review can identify the most plausible route and the questions still needing the institution's answer. It cannot guarantee admission.
