PhD fees in the UK: what a doctorate really costs
For 2026/27, current UK-university examples range from £5,238 a year for many Home full-time research degrees to £24,450 a year for a higher international PhD fee band, before research, extension, submission and living costs.
Part-time and distance rates differ by institution; total cost depends on every charged year.
The legal awarding institution sets tuition and awards the PhD.
CareerSkale can report a dated source but cannot fix the future price, approve fee status or make a private overseas award into a UK-recognised degree.

Check the university's live fee page and offer. Fee status, subject band, laboratory needs and start date can change the result.
Fee status changes the starting point
Home and international status is assessed under rules applied by the university; citizenship alone may not settle it. Residence history, immigration status, study location and start date can matter. Obtain the institution's formal assessment rather than using a marketing-page nationality selector as the decision.
An Irish applicant may see a Home/Republic of Ireland rate at some institutions, while another case can depend on the applicable fee regulations and residence. International students may also face several subject bands. If the offer gives a fee different from the web page, ask the university to explain the band and year.
Fee status is separate from admission and recognition. A Home fee does not prove funding eligibility, and an international fee does not tell you whether a qualification will be accepted elsewhere.

Public programme evidence does not establish that CareerSkale can accept a current application. Ask for the exact route, intake and fee in writing.
What headline tuition does not include
An application fee pays for processing and may be non-refundable. A registration or seat-booking payment may or may not be credited to tuition. Ask what happens after rejection, withdrawal or intake deferral.
Budget for software, specialist data, participant payments, transcription, equipment, laboratory consumables, fieldwork, travel, conference participation, editing permitted by the institution, printing and secure storage. Some projects carry a published fee band or bench fee.
Ask whether annual reviews, upgrade, continuation, writing-up and extension are included. A reduced writing-up fee can still add a year of cost. If full annual tuition continues until submission, delay is more expensive.
Check thesis-submission, examiner, viva, resubmission, correction, repository, certificate and graduation charges. Online study does not guarantee an online viva or no travel.
An overseas institution may quote CHF, USD or EUR. The sterling total changes with exchange rates, bank charges, taxes and gateway fees. Record who bears these costs and which day's rate applies.
Full-time total-cost scenario
At £5,238 per year, three annual charges equal £15,714 before increases and extras; four equal £20,952. This is arithmetic using the 2026/27 rate, not a promise that the rate stays fixed.
Add living costs, research expenses, writing-up or completion fees and a contingency for delay. If a project has a higher subject band, use that rate for every planned year and model annual increases.
Example with annual increases
If a £5,238 first-year fee rose by an assumed 3% for planning only, three annual charges would be approximately £5,238, £5,395 and £5,557 before rounding and institution rules. The total would be about £16,190, not £15,714. This is a scenario, not a forecast; use the institution's published increase policy where available.
For an international Band 2 route at £24,450, three unchanged annual charges alone would be £73,350. Research expenses and living costs can make the total materially higher. This explains why a one-year fee range cannot answer “what does a PhD cost?” without duration.
Part-time and distance study
A part-time annual rate can be about half the full-time Home rate but may run for six or more years. It can therefore approach the same base tuition before annual increases. Milestone timing, maximum registration and writing-up rules determine the total.
Distance fees are not consistently lower. Reading publishes the same Home fee for based-at-Reading and distance modes; Nottingham Trent publishes a separate at-distance rate; Hertfordshire publishes another distance-based amount. Check resources and attendance rather than assuming “online” means cheaper.
Part-time total example
Six years at an unchanged £2,619 would also total £15,714—the same arithmetic base as three years at £5,238. In reality, later annual increases and a longer exposure to extension risk can make the total different. Part-time study may reduce the yearly cash requirement without reducing total tuition.
Ask whether part-time candidates pay every calendar year, whether an interruption stops fees, and whether returning after interruption uses the original or current rate.
Research-cost scenarios
A desk-based humanities or social-science project may still need specialist databases, books, software, transcription, secure storage, archive access, conference travel and professional proofreading limited to the institution's permitted scope.
Travel, accommodation, local permissions, participant compensation, interpreters, insurance and contingency can dominate the budget. A delayed field season can create both new fieldwork costs and an extra registration period.
Bench fees or higher subject bands can cover facilities, consumables and specialist support, but the offer should state what remains chargeable. Equipment failure, repeat experiments and data-processing services may need contingency.
An employer can supply access and data, but the student may need transcription, anonymisation, secure tools and time away from work. If employment ends, replacement data access can affect both cost and duration.
The applicant should get supervisor input on a realistic research budget before accepting, while keeping the admission and funding decisions separate.
Funding pointer
UKRI studentships, eligible doctoral loans, university awards, employer sponsorship and charities use different rules. A studentship may cover fees and a stipend; a loan is repaid and may not cover the entire course.
Read PhD funding in the UK before treating self-funded tuition as the only option.
Before paying
- Confirm Home/international fee status.
- Obtain the annual rate and expected increases.
- Confirm normal and maximum charged years.
- Itemise research, extension, submission and viva costs.
- Identify the legal payee, refund terms and provider-failure responsibility.
- Check the awarder's official status and intended acceptance.
Also ask for the consequence of early submission. Some policies move a student to a lower continuation rate or adjust fees; others apply the annual charge according to fixed dates. Likewise, ask whether a failed viva, major revision or resubmission attracts a new examination or registration fee.
For current provision, see online PhD programmes in the UK. For appropriate help boundaries, see doctorate application support.
